An Old Soul

House and Leisure, February 2015, pages 95 to 99

Updating this Joburg home involved a fresh injection of minimal furniture and contemporary art while honouring its orginal 1940s shell.

Extract: While warmth and contrast were added through plush leathers, suedes and thick Belgian linens, the home's distinctive personality is expressed through the owners' vast collection of exclusive South African art, curated and conceptualised by Julia Meintjes. Linoprints by John Muafangejo and Elza Botha bring a graphic element to the stairwell, while a portrait byJohann Louw adds subtle colour and dynamism to the living room. 'We aimed to echo the elements of the artworks in the design. You will see that the carpet in the living room has the same type of line movement as the Vivian van der Merwe piece hanging on the wall, for example,' says Julia.
