A panel of patrons ... a surge of artists

Monday 09h00 - 17h00

We were approached by San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to present a tour of Tokara's gallery to a group of 38 SFMoMA patrons.

What a challenge! We knew they would be visiting studios of established artists, like William Kentridge, and commercial galleries in Cape Town and Johannesburg. As independent curators our opportunity was to show them works by artists whom they would be unlikely to come across elsewhere. We could give them insights into how much excellent work is made in South Africa, which our small commercial gallery industry cannot accommodate.

Where to start? The racks of our art store are full, our database of local artists scrolls down screens of the computer and fills four filing cabinets to bursting. We could fill Tokara's walls with a series of such exhibitions. Rigorous curatorial culling was necessary and we could only install a sample of what we’d like to have shown this major patrons group. The outcome?

A SURGE OF ARTISTS whose works are beautiful, meaningful, challenging, diverse. Works which deal with the representation of identity, of place, of personal narrative, political and environmental issues.
