Wat kyk ons? Selected artist’s views includes a selection of 45 works by established artists such as Walter Battiss, Robert Hodgins, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Maggie Laubser, Louis Maqhubela, Frans Oerder, Stanley Pinker, Cecil Skotnes and Guy Tillim, as well as works by lesser known artists. The range of works continues JMFA’s passion for promoting South African talent and Tokara’s patronage of local creativity.

Wat kyk ons? Selected artist’s views focuses primarily on what the chosen South African artists select to represent and how they interpret it. The exhibition presents a variety of subject matter which is roughly divided into landscape, African animals, portraiture and, figure study. Each work of art by the 31 different artists on display stands on its own by distinctively communicating something not only about its subject but also the artist. Works of art produced more than 200 years ago are on display, the earliest an 1804 hand coloured etching by natural history artist Samuel Daniell and the most contemporary being Stellenbosch University lecturer and conceptual artist Kathryn Smith’s 2004 Standard Bank Young Artist award winning photograph “Ennui”.

The exhibition will be on display in the foyer at Tokara until 1 May 2011.
